This is the cover for Darkness #100. It's not the published version, this is just practice and to beef up my color portfolio. I just got done with doing the color work on 148 images for a client's graphic novel and needed to do some color work for myself. Oy! That was a challenge - I need a vacation! lol So I took a couple days off from commission work and worked on this instead. Sometimes you just need to take a break and do something for fun, ya know? Most of my commission work, I'd say 99% of it, I'm not able to post due to copyrights and non-disclosure agreements, so it's nice to be able to color something for fun so I can post something here every once in a while.
Commissions are always Open - I'm a freelance digital artist so it's what I do full time. So if you're looking to get a commission done feel free to send me a note to get a price quote. I do color work on existing black and white art but I also do drawing commissions as well.
Hey, Steve! Your work is a real inspiration and I'm tickled pink that you came and left me a comment (and very honored you left me some critique too! Thank you!).
I think you're right that this image is a high-water mark for me, even though it doesn't have a lot of favorites compared to some of my other images, I've felt this one is probably my best color work - it's also the one that took me the longest; so that tells me I should slow down and take more time on my images. lol As for the mist, I'm confused now - conflicting critique. heheh I think that it might be one of those "taste preference" things perhaps? I really do enjoy the mist though, so I might try more mist in front next time (keeping it on it's own layer that way if it doesn't look right I can always remove it). I have a bad habit of merging the layers in the late stages of the coloring to make it easier for my computer to handle the files, but I should stop doing that. lol It makes it hard to make changes later.
Thank you so much for the compliment and the critique! That really means so much to me! If you ever want to leave more critique in the future to help me improve I'd be very grateful and honored. Though I know you're busy, so if you don't have time I totally understand.
I merge layers all the time too but before I do, I duplicate the file and rename it. That way if anything goes extremely wrong, you can always go back to an older, un-merged version.
That's a great tip. I need to train myself to start doing that more often. I tend to save a lot of versions of an image if I'm working on something for a client, but when I do stuff like this, stuff for myself for fun, I tend to not to be as "careful". Though I should be more careful on images like this as well. Thanks again, Steve! Feel free to come back and critique me anytime. I could always use pointers on how to improve.
I completely disagree with Sean.
I would hit the mist in front of the Angelus even harder...pushing everything even farther back into the picture creating more depth...not less!

Thank you again, Steve! You totally made my day!

Glad to help!
